Choosing a wall bed: what to measure before you order

Mattress width, the floor space an open bed needs, the wall, the mattress, and what sits in front of the bed by day. The questions customers ask us most, with our answers.

Most people come to us with one room that has to be two: a living room and a bedroom, a study and a guest room, a playroom and a children's bedroom. A wall bed does that, but only when it is chosen to fit the room. Below is the order in which we usually go through it at the first meeting.

1. Width

We make beds for 90, 120, 140, 160 and 180 × 200 cm mattresses. For a child or for guests, 90 is enough. Adults sleeping alone often go for 120. For two people, 140 or 160; a 180 needs a wide wall and a room to match.

2. How much space it takes

Closed, the bed is about 45 cm deep, roughly the depth of a normal wardrobe. Open, a vertical model comes out about 2.2 m from the wall, so that much floor has to stay free.

Height matters too. A vertical CITY 140, for example, measures 1582 × 2314 × 432 mm. The configurator on each model's page shows the exact dimensions for the size you pick, under the price.

3. Vertical or horizontal

A vertical bed lifts on its short side and, closed, looks like a tall cupboard. It is the usual choice for bedrooms and living rooms.

A horizontal bed folds on its long side, along the wall. Closed, it is lower, so it fits under a window, under a sloping attic ceiling or below a shelf. Open, it comes out from the wall by the width of the bed rather than its length. That is how we did the room in project no. 297, with two 140 × 190 beds.

4. What sits in front of the bed by day

  • COMPATTO is the plain bed with nothing in front. By day it is a flat wall.
  • CITY has a sofa in front. The bed comes down right over it; the cushions can stay.
  • KOSTAS has a sofa with storage, a cupboard above and shelves. LED lighting, a 220 V socket, a reading lamp and an upholstered headboard can be added to order.
  • TANGO has a desk on the front of the bed. When the bed comes down, the desk stays level with everything on it.
  • 2EASY is a bunk bed for two children. Closed, it sticks out only 31 cm from the wall.

5. Cupboards at the sides

Cupboard modules from 400 to 1000 mm wide go on the left and right, several on each side, for a wall of up to 5 m in total. You can put them together yourself on the model's page and see the price straight away.

6. The wall

The bed is fixed to the wall. We recommend concrete, reinforced concrete or brick. If your wall is plasterboard or something else, tell us before you order so we can work out a solution.

7. The mattress

The mattress should match the sleeping area and be no more than 23 cm thick. It is not included in the price of the bed. We often suggest FLAT ORTHO: 23 cm, medium firm, with pocket springs.

8. Can you sleep on it every night?

Yes. The base is a metal frame with beech slats and takes up to 150 kg. Gas struts matched to the weight of the front and the mattress make it easy to lift, and it closes quietly. The warranty is 24 months.

If you are unsure about anything, send us the room's measurements and a photo of the wall. We will tell you which model fits and what it will cost.
